Elesavetgrad Jewish Cemetery, Washington DC, Mosaic Mural Project

This project originated in 2012 as an idea to enhance the apearance of the temple at Elesavetgrad Cemetery. In collaboration between Yulia Hanansen and Ali Mirsky 4 mosaic panels were completed and installed in June 2013.

Project Description:
Elesavetgrad Cemetery mosaic panels are based on Jewish symbology and yet this is not a conventional piece. Traditional Jewish elements such as talis, Menorah, the star of David, light are boldly combined with the elements that are symbolic to everyone- flowers, blue sky, green landscape, water, meaningful text. Historically, this cemetery and a temple were founded by Jewish people of gay community in the 1970-ies. The institution still practices diversity and welcomes all.

It took over a year from start to finish to complete this project. The design approval decisions were made by the Board of Directors. The materials used for this project are smalti glass (Mexico), 24K gold (Italy), and stained glass (US).
